Maidstone Market - Fall 2009 Champions
Mud and Rain but play goes on
Maidstone Market had a full team but Tortorella Pools was missing their goalie due to sickness and lead forward Luis Vas who jumped on a nail that went into his heal which prevented him from even walking Tortorella Pools had just seven men for the entire match. Temperture was in the 50's, and rainy. We had about 20+ spectators. Maidstone before the match was undefeated with just one draw and had a 10-0-1 record, had just given up 1 goal but scored 30. You have to remember that of their total, they scored 17 goals against two games against Bayberry Nursery. Tortorella Pools record before the game was 6-3-2. Scored 19 goals and gave up 11. Match started off with both sides attacking well and Maidstone taking shots from a distance but they went wide. Maidstone's best chance early on was on a direct kick from about 35 yards out. Diego Marles would take the kick. He fired a shot that dropped under Leslie Czeledko's hands, Tortorella goalie, to the far post where Luis Correa of Maidstone was standing. Correa could not control the ball due to the field being very wet and slippery. Correa fired wide. Tortorella had several on goal shots that Alex Mesa saved. Best chance when Steven Orrego headed the ball that just went wide of the goal post. During the first half, Tortorella played well without their regular goalie and their best forward. Scoreless tie at the half. Luis Correa scores for Maidstone Market
During the second half, Maidstone came out strong and had the ball inside the Tortorella half. Tortorella had a hard time getting the ball out of their half. Tortorella lost some composure early in the second half. About 10 minutes into the second half, Luis Correa of Maidstone had the ball and dribbled into the Tortorella goalie box and fired a shot. The ball deflected off the leg of Juan Zuluaga of Tortorella and went in. Than about 2 minutes later, Juan Zuluage received his second yellow card of the night and is given the red card so Tortorella would play the rest of the match a man down. A couple of minutes later, Antonio Padilla had the ball and fired a grounder into the far corner of the Tortorella net to give Maidstone a 2 goal lead. Both sides kept on attacking. Maidstone had more shots but many went high and wide. Maidstone would move the ball slowly and were playing just to finish the game. So about 5 minutes before the conclusion of the match, Tortorella was able to score. A direct kick is given to Tortorella about 35 yards out. John Czeladko of Tortorella would take the kick. Czeladko fired and head high shot that went toward the left near post. It seemed that the ball was high enough that the lights prevented everyone from seeing it as it traveled toward the goal. The lights near the tennis courts make it difficult to see balls coming from that direction toward the goal. Well no was able to see the ball and it dropped near the goal line and went into the net. So now Tortorella was a goal down. The game picked up for both sides since scoring one more goal for Tortorella would tie the match. Play was hard and fast but about 2 minutes before the conclusion, Maidstone was able to score again. This time all of Tortorella was up the field and Rodolfo Marin hand the ball at mid field. Gehider Garcia and David Cardona of Maidstone teamed up to steal the ball from Marin. Leslie Czeladko, Tortorella goalie, ran up the field and tried to get a pass back from Marin. In the end, Marin lost the ball to Gehider Garcia and Garcia headed straight toward the Tortorella goal with just Czeladko in front of him and Cardona to the left side. When Garcia got to the Tortorella goalie box he fired the ball to Cardona who was alone near the far goal post. Cardona had a easy time hitting the ball into the net. With that goal, Maidstone won the fall 2009 championship match.
